Kiso Hirasawa is located on the right bank of Narai River, 900m above sea level, northeast of Naraijuku, and was established as a route of Nakasendo by the Edo Shogunate in Keicho 7, and began to develop as an artisan town positioned as a branch town of Naraijuku, an inn. Throughout the Period, the area flourished as the premier lacquerware production area along the Nakasendo Highway. In 2006, Hizen Hamashuku was selected as a Hizen Hamashuku: Important Traditional Building Preservation Area because many buildings that convey the characteristics of a lacquer town in the early Showa Period are still in existence.

Description

Kiso-Hirasawa is a village formed as a branch of neighboring Narai-juku, located along the Nakasendo Route developed by the Edo Shogunate. Its lacquerware industry has prospered since the Edo Period (1603-1867), mainly for its everyday items, and since the Meiji Era (1868-1912) it has grown through with the help of technological innovation such the Honkataji lacquering technique. In 1975, Kiso Lacquerware was designated as a Japanese traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and to this day, Kiso-Hirakawa continues to maintain its position as one of the leading lacquerware production areas in Japan. The Route are lined with lacquerware shops, wit the main buildings facing the streets and the Nurigura that served as lacquering workshops behind the courtyards. Kiso-Hirasawa retains the original layout that it has had since the late Edo Period (1603-1867), and the traditional Machiya houses, Nurigura, and other buildings together convey the unique historical atmosphere of this lacquerware production town, and in 2006,It was selected as a National Important Preservation District for Traditional Buildings.
