The main house of the Tezuka family, including the main house and the annexed tatami room of the Kaku family, was built in 1840 and is now the Kamitoya Museum, which is designated as a National Important Cultural Property with over 400 pieces of various tools, including old documents, pottery, and lacquer ware. The Tezuka Family Residence is a building that represents one of the essential values of Naraijuku, as its architectural form clearly reflects the shukueki system (the inn and post station system), which was one of the fundamental functions of the inn town.

Description
The Tezuka Family Residence is a building that was constructed in the year 1840. At each post station, the Shogunate mandated that a certain number of Tenma (horses for use at the station) and transport laborers to meet the needs of government officials, feudal lords, and other travelers. This was known as the Shukueki (or Shukuba-Tenma) system. It is said that each of the 11 Kiso post towns had 25 transport laborers and 25 Tenma horses at the ready. Those who managed the Tenma horses and transport laborers were known as Toiya. There were two Toiya in Narai-juku, one upper and one lower, and the Tezuka family served as the upper Toiya continuously for roughly 270 years from the Keicho Era (1602 onward) to the Meiji Restoration in 1868. The Tezuka Family Residence has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property because of its value as a building that retains its appearance as a Toiya in the Kiso region in the late Edo Period. Today, the building is a museum with over 400 items on display, including old documents, ceramics, and lacquerware.
